As the new Premiership season kicks off

Had an email from a friend of mine from Shanghai. Yep, remember it well and yep seems like a different time some how.

‘From South China Morning Post…

Ten years ago this week, a floppy-haired kid scored one of the more memorable Premiership goals. Long before Posh Spice, the Wags, Real Madrid’s Galacticos, the sarongs, broken metatarsals, camera-hogging goal celebrations and ludicrous world-wide exposure, David Beckham was a promising midfielder trying to break into the Manchester United first team ahead of the likes of Jordi Cruyff and Karel Poborsky. Beckham had already had a few games for United by then after a loan spell at Preston, but, on the opening day of the 1996-97 season, against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park, he signalled his arrival in the most emphatic way possible by scoring with a lofted shot from 55 yards. A star was born.’
